Prognostication: Christian Jones is going to be a valuable member of the Red Storm this season — primarily for the frontcourt. While starting seems out of the question, the depth that he will provide as well as toughness should be enough for him to be a pivotal player within the St. John’s rotation for the duration of the season.
Strengths: It’s a recurring theme for some of the Red Storm big guys, but Jones’ built is that of a linebacker more than a thin-framed finesse forward. Meaning, he is underneath to battle with other frontcourt players for rebounds, blocks and make some put-back buckets. He excels in those areas for the most part. It doesn’t hurt that he is athletic either.
Jones is also a very capable defender. In fact, the sophomore guarded the four and five positions last season. While not completely uncommon at this level of hoops, not many were as solid doing it as Christian Jones.
Weaknesses: A limited offensive game. Which isn’t really a huge deal as the Red Storm have never really expected Jones to be an offensive juggernaut. The Johnnies do need another offensive presence underneath to help out JaKarr Sampson, although, Jones is unlikely the answer.
Would also be nicer if he drew more fouls, but that may come with in-game experience.
Personal Note: For guys like Christian Jones and God’sgift Achiuwa, the amount of playing time they get depends on Steve Lavin and whether or not he plans on playing a slew of small guys at the same time. Small-ball does seem probable, but Jones is likely ahead of Achiuwa on the depth cart at this point, however, he is probably behind Chris Obekpa in the battle for minutes on the floor.
Random, but neat Christian Jones Factoid: Jones is a die-hard New York Knicks fan. Which means he is probably a glutton for punishment.
