Prognostication: Sir’Dominic Pointer is likely going to see a lot of time at the small forward position this season. With a logjam of talent in the backcourt, Pointer’s ability to play multiple positions will prove vital to the Red Storm as well as his playing time.
Head Coach, Steve Lavin, will obviously juggle around the rotation a lot in the non-conference games, but no incarnations of the rotation will be without the junior.
Strengths: Pointer is one of the more athletic Johnnies. That quality has helped him earn a reputation as a defensive wonder. Lavin relies heavily on him to guard the opponent’s best offensive player.
Sir’Dominic Pointer is also good at knowing his role on the team. Seems pretty mundane, but many players at the collegiate level are worried about the perception of them as players — Pointer has no such issues.
Weaknesses: His offensive decision making could certainly be better. Considering how little — in contrast to other ball-in-hand heavy guards — Pointer handles the rock, turning the ball over nearly two times a game is not good.
Jump shot from distance can also use work, although, he won’t be asked to shoot a ton of 20-footers this season.
Personal Note: Pointer is going to be important to this Red Storm team because of his defense. His role on the offensive side of the ball is going to be decreased from last season, but trust me, that is a good thing.
If he chooses to accept his role as one of the “lesser” offensive options and keeps up with his defensive mindset, the Johnnies will benefit greatly.
Random, but neat Sir’Dominic Pointer Factoid: The junior majors in liberal studies.
