D’Angelo Harrison

It is weird to me that Harrison is a senior. While he has been the longstanding “best” player on St. John’s it seems like other players are surpassing him on the perception radar. Maybe it has to do with Dan Dakich ripping his passion to shreds on national TV (for what it is worth, Harrison has always been super passionate) or the bubbling up excellent play of Jordan and Obekpa, but it almost feels like the greatness that is 3’Angelo Harrison has been overlooked.

The Positives

While not a great thee-point shooter by any stretch Harrison leads the team with a .344 three-point shooting percentage. Even though he isn’t deadly from the arc most opposing coaches have their players prepped in a way to guard Harrison from anywhere on the court, which helps spread the floor for the Johnnies.

Harrison is averaging 9.2 rebounds per game. So, um, let that sink in.

The volume-shooting Harrison is still scoring at a great rate (17.8 ppg), but it is his overall game that should get the most praise. Harrison is far more engaged on defense this year, has driven to the basket to help set up his teammates a lot this year and is still — for better or worse — the catalysts for all things St. John’s success and failure related.

Honestly, I will miss him when the season is over.

The Negatives

You have to take the good with the bad while talking about Harrison. He sometimes forces some unnecessary bombs early in the shot clock. To be fair, this is just who Harrison is a player. He is not going to change at this point. Be happy that he has improved in all other areas of his game from the time he first set on campus a few years ago.

It is his senior year. This makes me sad. That is a negative.

Overall Grade: B plus-ish

I really wanted to give him a full-fledged B+, but he still has room to improve. It is also not as if he is playing the best basketball of his career. There will come a time in the season where we will all want to give him a grading of an A, but for now a B plus-ish seems about right.
