St. John’s basketball target Ike Cornish has committed to Maryland over the Red Storm and others.

Ike Cornish is headed back home to Maryland as the Class of 2021 prospect announced on Wednesday afternoon that he will join the Terrapins.

Cornish was considering Maryland, St. John’s, Xavier, Rutgers, Virginia Tech, and Georgetown but it was heavily expected that the former Baltimore native would head back to his home state.

However, the one surprising detail that came from Cornish’s announcement was the date as he previously stated that he would be making his decision public on his birthday, August 21.

Ike Cornish made his announcement in a video that was posted to his Twitter page.

Mike Anderson and St. John’s only offered a scholarship to the shooting guard on April 10 as the Johnnies survived the cutdown to his Top-6 schools on May 16, which appeared to be a good sign for the Red Storm with some sustained momentum in Cornish’s recruitment.

St. John’s most recently had a virtual meeting with Cornish last week, as did the Rutgers Scarlet Knights.

The 6-foot-6 guard is ranked as the No. 78 player in the Class of 2021, No. 16 shooting guard in the class, and No. 3 player in the state of South Carolina, according to the 247 Sports Composite Rankings.

Cornish stars at Legacy Charter High School (S.C.) and becomes the second player to commit to Maryland head coach Mark Tuergon in the Class of 2021, joining Baltimore native Julian Reese.

If Ike Cornish selected to come to Queens, he would have been the first commitment in the Class of 2021 for head coach Mike Anderson and the Red Storm.

In reality it’s better for all schools involved that Cornish announced his decision earlier than expected as now coaches will be able to scratch out the four-star prospect from their recruiting boards and move on to other high quality players in the rising senior class.
