Former St. John’s basketball target Daylen Berry commits to Charlotte

St. John’s basketball target Daylen Berry committed to the Charlotte 49ers on Tuesday evening.

Mike Anderson and his coaching staff extend an offer to Class of 2021 shooting guard Daylen Berry back on August 4, but the interest between the two sides never truly materialized.

Berry committed to the Charlotte 49ers on Tuesday evening after a recent stretch where he saw his recruitment surge in the late stages.

The 6-foot-4, 170 pound guard also held offers from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Florida International, East Tennessee State, Loyola (Chicago), Fairfield, Wofford, George Mason, North Carolina Central, James Madison, Charleston Southern, and the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Daylen Berry is a three-star prospect and ranked as the No. 65 shooting guard and No. 13 player in the state of North Carolina, according to the Top247 Rankings.

The Cary, North Carolina native attends Panther Creek High School and he made his announcement via Twitter.

Berry becomes the first commitment in the Class of 2021 for head coach Ron Sanchez as Mike Anderson already has two commits in the senior class in Long Island Lutheran stars Drissa Traore and Rafael Pinzon.

On his commitment to Charlotte, Daylen Berry told 247 Sports, “I have a great relationship with coach Sanchez and coach Vic [Sfera] and I feel like I could do really well in their system.”

In the Class of 2020, Sanchez put together the No. 73 recruiting class in the country and the No. 1 recruiting class in its conference, Conference USA.

St. John’s is still not quite done with its recruiting class for the 2021-22 season as the Red Storm are looking for another dominant paint force to try and close up a hole that has plagued the team for the last decade.

The Johnnies have the the No. 45 recruiting class in the country and No. 10 in the Big East for the Class of 2021, according to 247 Sports Recruiting Rankings.
