St. John’s basketball Takeaway No. 1 – Julian Champagnie has taken the next step

Despite not playing the first two games of the season, there were still large expectations on the shoulders of Julian Champagnie.

After a strong end to the season in 2019-20, Champagnie didn’t just pick up where he left off, he surpassed it by ten fold.

Against Boston College and BYU, the Brooklyn, New York native is averaging 27.0 points per game, shooting 52.5-percent from the field.

Not only has the sophomore picked up his scoring load, he also looks much more confident and fluid in his moves on the court, scoring off the dribble and finding a way to create his own shots.

However, Champagnie doesn’t think of himself as the scoring leader for St. John’s, “I don’t think about that honestly and truly. I tell my teammates all the time, win, lose or draw, there’s one team. It’s us together, so I don’t really think about being ‘that guy.’”

More of Julian Champagnie will be needed to St. John’s to have the productive season it hopes entering Big East play.
