St. John’s basketball closed out the regular season with a loss against Seton Hall.

The disappointing end to the regular season has come to a close for the St. John’s basketball program with a loss to Seton Hall (14-6, 12-5 Big East), 59-43.

St. John’s (7-14, 4-12 Big East) had to cancel its scheduled matchup with Creighton on Saturday afternoon in Queens after there was an inconclusive COVID-19 test within the Red Storm’s program but received the all-clear prior to Monday’s tilt.

Seton Hall entered Queens riding a four game winning streak and boasting one of the best offenses in the Big East but were slowed by the St. John’s defense.

The Pirates shot 33.7-percent from the field and 13.3-percent from three-point range but shot 89.5-percent (17-of-19) from the free throw line in its 16-point victory.

Desiree Elmore had more than half of the points for Seton Hall, posting 30 points as St. John’s continued to struggle with talented post players.

The Red Storm also continued its shooting woes at 34.5-percent from the floor and 15.0-percent from deep. The Johnnies also only attempted five free throws in the loss while committing 17 turnovers.

Unique Drake continued her excellent play of late with 16 points as the only member of the team to reach double-figures with 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting but sophomore star Leilani Correa only recorded two points on 1-of-10 shooting from the field.

St. John’s basketball prepares for postseason

St. John’s certainly didn’t put together the best regular season but it will quickly have a chance to redeem itself in the first game of the Big East Women’s Basketball Tournament against No. 9 seed Xavier (5-9, 2-8 Big East).

The Johnnies are the No. 8 seed and the winner of the Red Storm vs. Musketeers will play No. 1 seed UConn (21-1, 18-0 Big East) on Saturday afternoon.

Tipoff is scheduled for 11:00am EST (Big East Digital Network) on Friday, March 5 between St. John’s and Xavier from then Mohegan Sun Arena.
