Things learned in St. John’s basketball first loss of the season:

St. John’s needs production from Montez Mathis and Tareq Coburn

Prior to his ejection, Montez Mathis looked to be on his way to a big night for the Red Storm.

Mathis had five points on 2-of-2 shooting, including one made 3-pointer, in just ten minutes.

Tareq Coburn, who filed in for Mathis in the second half starting lineup, struggled finding his footing in the game as he was held scoreless in 16 minutes and missed all three of his shot attempts, each from 3-point territory.

Both players were supposed to help St. John’s improve its shooting from a season ago and the team needs production from each player in order to reach its maximum potential.

As the Red Storm will hit the road in Big East play in a couple of months, it is pivotal that the Johnnies get positive offensive impacts from both Montez Mathis and Tareq Coburn.
