Things learned in St. John’s basketball first loss of the season:

St. John’s must value the basketball more

One of the biggest causes for concern this season for St. John’s was turnovers.

The Johnnies had 20 turnovers against Mississippi Valley State, 15 turnovers against St. Peter’s, and another 15 turnovers against Indiana.

Miscues at home against lesser competition are easier to overcome than those on the road against a formidable opponent.

Those turnovers resulted in 20 points for the Hoosiers, something that looms large in a 2-point loss.

As the rest of the non-conference season unfolds, St. John’s must continue to get better at valuing the basketball and limiting transition opportunities for its opponents.

The Johnnies are back in action on Saturday night in Queens against Fairleigh Dickinson (6:00 p.m., FS2).
