The St. John’s basketball team will open up Big East Conference play against Butler.

It is no longer the unofficial conference opener for the St. John’s basketball team, rather it is the official Big East opener on Thursday night as Butler comes to Queens.

St. John’s was scheduled to play Seton Hall on Monday night but the game was originally forfeited by the Pirates due to COVID-19 issues within its program. The Big East Conference amended its rule on forfeits on Wednesday and the game is labeled as ‘postponed’.

Butler comes into New York with a rash of injuries including stars Bryce Nze (shoulder) and Bo Hodges (knee) while Chuck Harris (non-COVID illness) did not play on Saturday in a blowout loss to Purdue.

It is too early to label games as ‘must wins’ but Thursday feels like a must win for St. John’s if it wants to accomplish its goal of reaching the NCAA Tournament.

St. John’s Injury Report vs. Butler

St. John’s will down three key players on Thursday night against Butler.

The Johnnies will not have Julian Champagnie, Joel Soriano, and Tareq Coburn as all three players have tested positive for COVID-19.

Champagnie is expected back next week against Marquette while Soriano and Coburn should be out through the January 1 matchup against Georgetown.

St. John’s vs. Butler Odds: Spread, Over/Under & Betting Pick

WynnBET’s College Basketball Odds lists St. John’s as 6-point favorite at home against Butler on Thursday night while the total is listed at 135.5.

Saturday’s performance was the worst of the season for the Red Storm despite not having Champagnie and now the team will be without Soriano, who was one of the best players on the court for the Johnnies.

We will take St. John’s to win the game outright but Butler will cover the six-point spread as the total will go under the number listed.
