No. 4 St. John’s basketball moment in 2021: Johnnies take home a slew of Big East honors

In March, after turning around a season that looked like it was heading south in a hurry, the Johnnies would earn a slew of Big East honors at the end of the regular season.

Posh Alexander became just the fourth player in Big East history to earn Freshman of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors joining the likes of Patrick Ewing (1982), Alonzo Mourning (1989), and Allen Iverson (1995).

Alexander averaged 10.9 points, 4.2 assists, 3.4 rebounds, and 2.6 steals per game in his freshman season.

Julian Champagnie earned Most Improved Player of the Year honors after a season in which the Brooklyn native led the Big East in scoring, becoming just the third Johnnie to earn the award along with Sir Dominic Pointer and Dwight Hardy.

Head Coach Mike Anderson was also named Big East Coach of the Year becoming the first St. John’s coach to win the award since Brian Mahoney in the 1992-93 season.
