A pair of St. John’s basketball stars earned local postseason honors.

On Monday morning, the Metropolitan Basketball Association Writers announced their postseason awards featuring Julian Champagnie and Posh Alexander.

Champagnie, who has already announced that he is forgoing his senior year and entering the 2022 NBA Draft, was also selected to the 2021-22 All-Met First Team.

The 6-foot-8 forward from Brooklyn led the Red Storm with 19.2 points per game and 6.6 rebounds per game in 31 games this past season on 41.4% shooting and 33.7% shooting from three-point range.

Hofstra’s Aaron Estrada, Rutgers’ Ron Harper Jr., Iona’s Tyson Jolly, Wagner’s Alex Morales, and Seton Hall’s Jared Rhoden were also named to the First Team with Harper Jr. winning the Haggerty Award.

Posh Alexander was named to the All-Met Second Team after averaging 13.8 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.3 steals per game in 29 games this past season.

Rutgers’ Geo Baker, Long Island’s Ty Flowers, Saint Peter’s KC Ndefo, Iona’s Nelly Junior Joseph, and Manhattan’s Jose Perez were also selected to the Second Team.

St. John’s basketball adding reinforcements to 2022-23 roster

Posh Alexander will now line up alongside Illinois transfer Andre Curbelo in the backcourt next season as Curbelo returns to New York after two seasons at Illinois.

This offseason has also seen the departures of Aaron Wheeler, Tareq Coburn, and Stef Smith.

Smith has signed with the Guelph Nighthawks in Canada, Wheeler is forgoing his final year of eligibility to go pro, and Coburn is graduating.

St. John’s still has two open scholarship spots to add talent to the roster for next season and it seems likely that the program will add at the forward position that can also provide some outside shooting.

The Red Storm are looking to improve upon its underachieving season this past year and make it back to the NCAA Tournament in 2022-23, which would be the first under head coach Mike Anderson.
