The St. John’s basketball team will renew an old Big East rivalry in Brooklyn.

For the first time since 2016 the St. John’s basketball team will matchup against the Syracuse Orange on the hardwood.

St. John’s used an 8-0 to close its game against Temple on Monday to advance to the Empire Classic Championship Game while Syracuse, which jumped out to a 14-2 run against Richmond, needed overtime to take down the Spiders.

The Johnnies have won three straight games against the Orange following a nine game losing streak to its former conference foe.

Prior to the St. John’s winning streak, Syracuse had also won 15-of-16 games against the Red Storm and lead the all-time series, 49-37.

St. John’s Injury Report vs. Syracuse

St. John’s was without Rafael Pinzon (ankle) in Monday’s victory over Temple and it is likely he will be out again on Tuesday against Syracuse.

Pinzon was not in a walking boot on the Red Storm bench, perhaps a positive sign in his recovery after suffering the injury in the victory over Nebraska.

The Johnnies did have Esahia Nyiwe available on Monday for the first time since the season opener against Merrimack after he was away from the team following the tragic loss of his brother.

Nyiwe did not see any action against Temple.

St. John’s vs. Syracuse Odds: Spread, Over/Under & Betting Pick

WynnBET’s college basketball odds lists St. John’s as a 3.5-point favorite against Syracuse on a neutral floor in the Barclays Center while the over/under is listed at 154.5.

Both teams struggled at times in its first game as Syracuse was outplayed following their 14-2 run to begin the game against Richmond before rallying to win in overtime and St. John’s could not put Temple away in the second half after recovering from its slow start.

Offensively, St. John’s has to make this a transition game to avoid facing the Syracuse zone and run at all times. On made shots, missed shots, and turnovers. Just run, run, run.

Defensively, St. John’s has looked stout over the last two games and that has to be the case once again facing the volume shooter of Joe Girard.

The Red Storm have the players, Posh Alexander and Andre Curbelo, to make him uncomfortable and must utilize their press the entire length of the floor.

Syracuse can be sloppy with the basketball and take poor shots and that will continue in Brooklyn on Tuesday night.

We will take St. John’s to win and cover the spread while the total will go under the number listed.
