St. John’s basketball center Joel Soriano is trying to help land Walter Clayton Jr.

A little help has never hurt anyone and St. John’s basketball center Joel Soriano is trying to help his new head coach Rick Pitino on the recruiting trail.

Pitino has been quite busy tying to reshape the Red Storm roster around the standout center and one player that the program has been focusing on in the transfer portal is Iona guard Walter Clayton.

Clayton, the MAAC Player of the Year, is no stranger to Pitino after the two spent a pair of years together with the Gaels but the Lake Wales, Florida is also considering returning home to play for the Florida Gators next season.

The 6-foot-2 guard visited Gainesville this weekend and documented the trip on Instagram.

Soriano made it known that he thinks St. John’s colors look better on Walter Clayton than the blue and orange of Florida.

“St. John’s look better gang,” the Red Storm captain commented.

Walter Clayton put up staggering numbers this season at Iona averaging 16.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game while shooting 45.5-percent from the field, 43.1-percent from the 3-point line, and 95.3-percent from the free throw line.

Walter Clayton will visit St. John’s following the Final Four this weekend, according to the New York Post, and has narrowed his choices between the Red Storm and Florida.

St. John’s has already seen Rafael Pinzon, O’Mar Stanley, AJ Storr, and Kolby King enter the transfer portal and the program has lost commitments from unranked shooting guard Harrison Reede and junior college All-American Yaxel Lendeborg.

Rick Pitino said during his introductory press conference that he would be brining as many as eight new players to St. John’s this offseason.

The Red Storm have not yet landed a player under the Hall of Fame coach.
