Big East basketball power rankings after uneasy first week for many teams

It was not a great start to the season for the Big East after last year's disappointment

There was a lot made about only three Big East basketball teams making the NCAA Tournament last season and the conference was going to do a lot to rectify that this season. However, it has been seven days and three teams have already lost 'buy games'.

Villanova, Butler, and Seton Hall each dropped an opening week game and put the league in a precarious position after so much talk about how it could be one of the best conferences in the country this season.

Still, at the top remains the back-to-back National Champion UConn Huskies that have been the new crown jewel of the conference while Creighton, Marquette, and St. John's look to dethrone Dan Hurley's squad.

It remains very early in the season and a lot could change but after one week of basketball here are the Big East basketball power rankings:

11. DePaul Blue Demons (2-0)

DePaul is going to be much better than last season, although that isn't saying much. But the Blue Demons finally have a quality coach who will eventually get talent to Chicago. For now, DePaul is going to have to win primarily because of his coaching.

Needed a buzzer beater to force overtime against Southern Indiana might not have been the cleanest debut -- albeit in a victory -- but a 33-point victory against Prairie View was a step in the right direction.

The first month of the season in a weak schedule, but do not be surprised if DePaul pulls a few upsets this season.

10. Butler Bulldogs (1-1)

Butler has played two games and was not impressive in either.

There's talent on the team with Jahmyl Telfort and Pierre Brooks but that has still added up to an early season loss at home to Austin Peay in a season that Thad Matta needs to have better success in Indianapolis.

A win on Friday night at home against SMU -- an ACC opponent -- would be a start of making inroads to forget its most recent loss.
