The history continued for the St. John’s basketball program in the NBA Draft as Dillon Mitchell was selected as the No. 40 overall pick by the Boston Celtics in the second round.

Mitchell averaged 8.3 points, 7.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.3 steals per game in his one season with the Red Storm. As a 5-star prospect and McDonald’s All-American coming out of high school, he began his college career at Texas before spending a season at Cincinnati prior to making the jump to the Johnnies.

The 6-foot-8 forward rose up many draft boards around the league with his strong performance at the NBA Draft Combine and impressive workouts with teams. He has the versatility to defend at least four positions on the floor and showed the ability to orchestrate an offense as a point guard late in the season with St. John’s.

Should Dillon Mitchell get a chance to make the Celtics roster this season, he could play a role in the team trying to reclaim its throne at the top of the Eastern Conference. Mitchell has the size, length, and athleticism to try and slow down the potent wings of the New York Knicks like Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby.

Boston’s roster remains in flux with the trade rumors swirling around All-Star Jaylen Brown and the team trying to get better on the defensive side of the ball by selecting Houston’s Chris Cenac in the first round on Tuesday night.

Combining with Zuby Ejiofor’s selection at the Atlanta Hawks in the first round on Tuesday night, St. John’s has now seen two players picked in the same draft for the first time since 2000. If Bryce Hopkins is picked later on Wednesday night, it’ll be the first time the program has three players drafted in the modern draft era.
