The St. John’s basketball roster is beginning to take shape after a dormant week.

Things were quiet around the Johnnies during the opening of the transfer portal, but the wheels are in motion as Joson Sanon will enter the transfer portal after spending one year with the program.

He joins Sadiku Ibine Ayo, Imran Suljanovic, Lefteris Liotopoulos, and Dylan Darling to enter the portal within the last seven days.

Sanon came to the Red Storm from Arizona State with big expectations of an NBA future but took time to get adjusted to the style of play and averaged 7.9 points and 2.4 rebounds per game this season on 33.8-percent shooting from the floor and 33.6-percent from 3-point range.

Rick Pitino called the 6-foot-5 sophomore the most gifted player on the team for what he would do in practice and floated the idea late in the season that he would return for a second season with the Johnnies.

“I've said it all along, Joson's physically the most talented ball player on the team,” the head coach said after St. John’s defeated Seton Hall in the Big East Tournament.

Other players on the team echoed the same sentiments about Sanon’s talents and development throughout the year.

St. John’s landed British point guard Quinn Ellis on Tuesday and are expected to make several other additions to its backcourt within the next two weeks after hosting Toledo guard Leroy Blyden Jr., Kansas State wing Abdi Bashir Jr., and Robert Morris wing DaSean Goode this week.

The move leaves St. John’s with Ian Jackson, who is expected to remain with the Red Storm after an up-and-down season, and freshman Kelvin Odih, who seldomly played this season, as the lone returners in its backcourt. In addition to its portal entries, the Johnnies also must replace starter Oziyah Sellers who exhausted all of his eligibility.
