After entering the transfer portal in early August, former St. John’s basketball guard Oziyah Sellers is hoping he found his new home after committing to SMU last week.
Sellers is hoping to land another year of eligibility in the NCAA’s proposed 5-for-5 rule but is in the midst of legal litigation like many other players around the country with less than two months before the start of the regular season.
According to a press release published by SMU, Sellers has enrolled in the school and is practicing with the team while he waits on a decision regarding his eligibility status. He was not selected in the 2026 NBA Draft but played with the New York Knicks in the NBA Summer League.
He did not sign a two-way or Exhibit 10 contract.
The paring at SMU reunited Oziyah Sellers with head coach Andy Enfield, who coached the California native during his first two seasons of college basketball at USC. In the following two seasons, Sellers has started 71-of-72 games between Stanford and St. John’s.
He averaged 10.3 points per game with the Johnnies last season and shot 42.9-percent from the floor and 35.1-percent from 3-point range, which were the lowest of his career since his freshman season with the Trojans.
With Enfield at USC, he started just six of 58 games and averaged only 9.7 minutes per game.
St. John’s is also waiting for a handful of rulings on its roster, including Auburn transfer Keyshawn Hall and Indiana transfer Reed Bailey as well as international prospects Quinn Ellis and Babacar Sane, however there was no potential reunion between the Red Storm and Oziyah Sellers for the upcoming season.
Sellers averaged just 6.3 points per game in the NCAA Tournament, shooting 30.4-percent from the field, including a 2-for-9 shooting performance in St. John’s Sweet 16 loss to Duke.
