Former St. John's basketball guard Cruz Davis is getting a tour of the New York City college basketball programs after he announced his commitment to Hofstra on Friday afternoon.

Davis was the first Red Storm play to declare he was entering the transfer portal after just one season in Queens. The Texas native only played in four games for the Johnnies after injuries derailed his season.

The 6-foot-3 guard suffered a broken hand during a preseason practice but returned for the St. John's season opener, which he scored a season-high eight points. However, he rushed back from the injury and didn't allow his hand to fully heal as setbacks forced him to be sidelined.

Rick Pitino said that Davis didn't have full feeling in some of his fingers, which limited him when trying to dribble and shoot. He visited with multiple specialists and allowing time was the best couse of action to returning to full health.

Cruz Davis' last game played for St. John's was on December 1.

The school applied for a medical redshirt for the sophomore guard and it was granted, meaning Davis will have three years of eligibility remaining when his career starts with the Pride in the fall.

Davis followed Pitino to Queens after beginning his career at Iona, averaging 6.5 points per game on 41.9-percent shooting from the floor and being a unanimous selection to the All-MAAC rookie team.

Hofstra has a long recent lineage of standout guards to come through its program under head coach Speedy Claxton, like Aaron Estrada, Tyler Thomas, and Darlinstone Dubar. Davis had already been ruled out for the season when the Red Storm defeated the Pride in late December.

St. John's Glenn Taylor Jr. and Drissa Traore remain in the transfer portal and have yet to find new destinations.
