The Big East handed down its punishments for Friday’s fight between St. John’s and Providence, and everyone escaped unscathed except the instigator.

Duncan Powell, who committed the Flagrant 2 foul on Bryce Hopkins with 14:25 remaining in the second half, has been suspended for three games. He was immediately ejected from the game for the act but also threw a punch in the skirmish that ensued.

One game of the suspension was mandated by NCAA rules as part of his ejection for fighting while the other two games were issued by the league for his actions on the court.

A total of six players, including Powell, were ejected because of the fight but the other five did not receive any additional penalties.

St. John’s Dillon Mitchell and Providence’s Jaylin Sellers were ejected after being issued dead ball flagrant technical fouls while Red Storm players Ruben Prey, Kelvin Odih, and Sadiku Ibine Ayo were ejected for leaving the team bench.

Friar freshman Jamier Jones also received a Flagrant 2 foul later in the second half, which resulted in an ejection, for pushing Zuby Ejiofor with two hands in the back on a fast break layup.

He did not receive any further punishment from the league.

Providence led by one, 40-39, at the time of the fight and seized momentum in the game after trailing by as many as 13 points. After the officials sorted out the melee, the Friars never led again as St. John’s went on to win 79-69.

Duncan Powell will miss Providence’s (11-15, 4-11 Big East) matchups against DePaul, Xavier, and Creighton. He can return for the final two games of the regular season and the Big East Tournament.

No. 17 St. John’s (20-5, 13-1 Big East) will return to action on Wednesday (9:00 p.m. ET, TNT) to conclude its two-game road trip against Marquette (9-17, 4-11 Big East).
