St. John’s has been very selective in the transfer portal this offseason and it’s hoping that its open roster spots – and available money – will be able to land one more major player from the portal.
The biggest name still available is Iowa State transfer Milan Momcilovic, although he is going through the NBA Draft process, and the Red Storm appear to be entering the mix to try and get him to Queens.
Chatter started to pick up around the Johnnies’ involvement with Momcilovic at the NBA Draft Combine this week, but the 48.7-percent 3-point shooter from this season wouldn’t reveal much about his future when meeting the media in Chicago on Wednesday.
"I'm still focused on the draft," he explained. "I haven't even talked to any colleges yet, but I'm sure if I have to go back, there is a spot open for me somewhere. I'm still going through this process — the deadline is the 27th of May, so I have a couple of weeks. I'm going to obviously finish this week, and then I've got some workouts with teams lined up.”
Kentucky and Louisville are the other two programs that are most associated with Momcilovic as the Wildcats have been connected with him immediately after entering the portal.
Both Mark Pope and Pat Kelsey were in Chicago during the NBA Draft Combine while St. John’s associate head coach Steve Masiello was on hand for the Red Storm.
"If I return to college, just a fit that I can play well in and hopefully help my chances to go to the NBA he year after that. Hopefully I'm on a good team that can go far in the tournament," Momcilovic continued.
"That process will move pretty quick. I feel like I've been in college for three years, and I know what to ask and what to look for. I don't need to go on a visit or anything. I can probably choose pretty quickly. Also, there aren't a lot of schools that still have a lot of money or a lot of roster spots, so it's not like I'm choosing between 15 schools, it's going to be three or four."
The only additions St. John’s has made from the transfer portal has been Syracuse forward Donnie Freeman and Columbia guard Avery Brown as the rest of its roster has come from international prospects.
If the Red Storm can land Milan Momcilovic it would elevate them as the favorite to three-peat as Big East Champions.
