A day that St. John’s basketball fans have thought about for nearly five years has finally come yet it flew under the radar.
Kyle Cuffe Jr., the son of former Red Storm standout Kyle Cuffe, has committed to the Johnnies out of the transfer portal after spending last season with Mercer. He averaged 7.3 points per game last season and will be on the fourth school of his college career this winter.
The New York native was a priority recruit for the previous St. John’s staff under Mike Anderson but opted to commit to Kansas over the Red Storm. After playing just two games and redshirting, Cuffe Jr. transferred to Syracuse for two seasons before landing at Mercer.
Now, he finally returns to St. John’s for his final year of eligibility and will look to be a quality depth piece for the Red Storm this season.
"Kyle comes to us with great experience at Kansas, Syracuse, Mercer and now St. John's" Rick Pitino said on Monday. "He will help solidify our great backcourt."Â
St. John’s has added British point guard Quinn Ellis and Columbia transfer Avery Brown to its backcourt that also retained Ian Jackson and Lefteris Liotopolous from last season.
Coming out of Blair Academy (NJ), Kyle Cuffe Jr. was a consensus 4-star recruit and a Top-100 player in the Class of 2021. While at Kansas, he was a teammate of St. John’s legend Zuby Ejiofor. He was also a teammate of St. John’s transfer Donnie Freeman at Syracuse.
He averaged 5.1 points per game in his second season with the Orange, a team the Johnnies will play this season. For his career, he is a 37.4-percent shooter from the field and 32.7-percent from 3-point range.
Kyle Cuffe Jr. will hope to help St. John’s in its quest for a third straight Big East championship this upcoming season.
