The St. John’s basketball team has dropped in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll for the second consecutive week – but this time it was none of their own doing.
After falling from No. 5 to No. 13 following its loss against then No. 15 Alabama last week, the Johnnies were off for seven days before returning to action against William & Mary on Saturday night.
Despite just a five-point lead at halftime, the Red Storm turned on the burners after halftime and won by 33 points in a second half demolition.
Still, the Johnnies saw its ranking drop by one spot to No. 14. It comes on the heels of a week which saw No. 7, No. 8, No. 9, and No. 11 lost this week.
Gonzaga, who has been very impressive through four games this season which included wins over Oklahoma, Creighton, and Arizona State, made the jump to No. 13.
UConn is the only other Big East team that is ranked as the Huskies remained at No. 3, trailing Purdue and Houston, following its victory over No. 7 BYU in Boston on Saturday night.
Arizona and Duke complete the Top 5 while Louisville, Michigan, Illinois, BYU, and Florida complete the Top 10.
Alabama, who is now No. 11, and Kentucky are also ahead of the Red Storm – in addition to Gonzaga.
It’ll be another slow week for St. John’s with only one game on the docket for Thursday night as Bucknell will enter Carnesecca Arena. However, things will ratchet up very quickly for the Red Storm next week with three games in Las Vegas during the Players Era Festival.
The Johnnies will play No. 16 Iowa State, Baylor, and a third team which will be determined based on the results of the first two days of the tournament.
