The first month of the season has not been as productive for the St. John’s basketball team as they would have liked, seeing its Associated Press Top 25 ranking drop from No. 5 to No. 23 after the most recent poll was released on Monday afternoon.
The Johnnies (4-3) have also held spots at No. 13 and No. 14 through five weeks.
The Red Storm are coming off a 1-2 week in Las Vegas at the Players Era Championship, losing to then No. 15 Iowa State and No. 21 Auburn with its lone win against Baylor.
The Cyclones are now No. 10 in the poll after its perfect week in Vegas while Auburn checked in at No. 20.
Alabama, who defeated St. John’s during the first week of the season, is No. 12 as the Storm have lost all three of its games against ranked foes.
UConn is the only other team from the Big East that remains ranked this week at No. 5 while Seton Hall received votes following its impressive showing at the Maui Invitational.
Baylor also received 13 votes in this edition of the poll.
St. John’s debuted in the NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET) rankings this season at No. 23 on Monday morning, which was third best in the Big East behind UConn (No. 8) and Butler (No. 21).
The Red Storm are running out of opportunities to land marquee non-conference victories this season but will have the chance to land its first win of the year against an SEC team as St. John’s will host Ole Miss at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night (8:00 p.m. ET, Peacock) in its only game this week.
