Just hours after the St. John’s basketball team landed an opening night victory over Monmouth at Carnesecca Arena, the Johnnies took home another victory off the court with the commitment of 5-star wing Malachi Jordan.
Jordan announced his decision to join the Red Storm on Tuesday morning after visiting with the program two weeks ago. His trip to New York began on October 24 and concluded with a tour of Madison Square Garden prior to St. John’s exhibition game against Texas on October 25.
The 6-foot-7 standout at Prolific Prep picked the Johnnies over Kansas and Vanderbilt.
“Jordan is one of the most physically gifted prospects in the class. He has good positional size, a powerful frame, long arms, and explosive vertical athleticism,” Adam Finkelstein, the Director of Scouting for 247Sports explained.
He is the highest ranked high school player to commit to Rick Pitino since he started his tenure with St. John’s as well as the highest ranked player ever to verbally announce his intentions to join the program.
Malachi Jordan is the No. 20 player in the class of 2027, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, with a 0.9922 player grade.
Simeon Wilcher, who committed to the Red Storm weeks after Pitino was hired, was the No. 35 player in the 247Sports Composite rankings with a 0.9869 grade and Rysheed Jordan, a member of the class of 2013 who played for Steve Lavin was also the No. 35 player with a 0.9806 grade.
St. John’s will likely have a lot of spots to fill on its roster next season with the expected departures of Quinn Ellis, Tounde Yessoufou, Keyshawn Hall, and Reed Bailey and Jordan is now one of the focal points.
The Red Storm are expected to be much more active in high school recruiting this cycle with the anticipated changes to the NCAA eligibility rules following a tumultuous offseason, but the program will still be a major factor in transfer portal recruiting this spring.
