The St. John’s basketball program has already gone back to work after its elimination from the NCAA Tournament on Saturday and made its first addition of the offseason with Arizona State freshman Joson Sanon.

Sanon announced his commitment to the Red Storm on social media Wednesday morning.

The 6-foot-5 guard was a 5-star recruit coming out of high school that had aspirations of being a one-and-done at the college level and shined to begin his career with the Sun Devils before struggling with an ankle injury since January.

He finished the season averaging 11.9 points per game on 42.2-percent shooting from the floor and 36.9-percent from 3-point range, however, he was making 48.2-percent of his triples in November and December before spraining his ankle on December 31.

Sanon was originally committed to Arizona but decommitted from the Wildcats in the spring after Caleb Love announced he was returning to the Wildcats for his final year of eligibility.

“Sanon is a volume scoring wing who is capable of getting his shot at multiple levels. His best weapon over the years has been his mid-range pull-up game, with good lift into his release,” Adam Finklestein, the director of scouting for 247Sports said during his high school evaluation.

“Within the last year, we’ve seen his range extend out to the three-point line with the same ability to rise-up into his shot. He’s very adept at getting to his spots and capable of getting downhill in the open floor but doesn’t put quite as much pressure on the rim when operating within the half-court.”

St. John’s will lose at least Kadary Richmond and Deivon Smith in the backcourt this offseason and will put an emphasis on shooting after making just 30.4-percent of its 3-pointers this year and were just 2-for-22 from downtown in its season ending loss.

The Red Storm have no commitments from any high school players and there have been no announced transfers from its roster yet.
