The St. John’s basketball program announced its plans on how it will honor the legendary Lou Carnesecca prior to its next game against Kansas State following his death on Saturday.
Carnesecca passed away at the age of 99 years old, weeks prior to his 100th birthday.
First, the Red Storm decided to postpone its regularly scheduled ‘Black Out’ from this game until Tuesday, December 17 against DePaul, the conference opener for the Johnnies. The team was going to wear a new alternate black uniform and encourage all fans to wear black.
Now, St. John’s will be wearing its traditional white uniform with a commemorative patch on its jersey. The patch that honors Carnesecca will be on every uniform the Red Storm wear throughout the rest of the season.
There will also be a special decal on the court that remembers the legacy of Lou Carnesecca.
Prior to tipoff, a video tribute will be played on the big screens inside Carnesecca Arena, and a moment of silence will be held in his memory. The New York Knicks and Madison Square Garden held a moment of silence for ‘Looie’ prior to tipoff on Sunday evening.
Fans that attend either the St. John’s men’s or women’s basketball game this weekend will receive a Lou Carnesecca 526 pin, which signifies the number of victories he achieved as the head coach of the Johnnies, in addition to a keepsake that features a custom illustration and the career highlights of the head coach.
St. John’s players will wear special warmup shirts that have ‘526’ across the chest with Lou Carnesecca’s signature under the number. Fans will be able to purchase the shirts inside the arena or at the campus bookstore on Saturday afternoon.
Finally, the Red Storm will keep Carnesecca’s seat (Section 7, Row JJ, Seat 3) inside the arena vacant for the game.
Lou Carnesecca’s funeral will be held on St. John’s campus at St. Thomas More Church on Friday morning at 10 a.m. ET. Red Storm fans and supporters can watch the service by visiting this link.
