The chaos of the college basketball offseason is still roaring after the latest proposed 5-in-5 eligibility ruling has been accelerated in the court room and recently graduated seniors have seemingly won the war.
Most seniors will be granted another year of eligibility and St. John’s guard Oziyah Sellers is hoping to take advantage of the new opportunity.
Sellers has entered the transfer portal, which will reopen for these specific players from August 3-10. The biggest stipulation is that the player has not signed an NBA contract, which the California native did not after only agreeing to a Summer League contract with the Knicks.
In his one season with the Johnnies, Sellers averaged 10.3 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game while shooting 42.9-percent from the field and 35.1-percent from 3-point range, both of which were the lowest since his freshman season at USC.
The 6-foot-5 guard will likely be the only senior from last year’s St. John’s roster to take advantage of this new rule as Zuby Ejiofor and Bryce Hopkins have inked their NBA deals. Dillon Mitchell has not signed his contract with the Boston Celtics yet but there is no indication he is mulling a return to college.
The Red Storm will be active in monitoring the players that become eligible. The Johnnies added Hungarian forward Zsombor Maronka in the wake of Syracuse transfer Donnie Freeman rupturing his Achillies during an offseason workout.
However, the new NCAA roster rules cap teams at 15 players so St. John’s will have to get creative with its roster or release players from their National Letters of Intent if it wants to continue to build upon its team.
Oziyah Sellers spent the first two seasons of his college career at USC before playing a year at Stanford prior to making the cross-country journey to St. John’s.
