After a breakout season with the San Antiono Spurs, former St. John’s standout Julian Champagnie is getting rewarded.
The 6-foot-7 wing has inked a new three-year, $45 million deal with the organization, according to multiple reports, after the Spurs declined his $3 million team option to give him the extension.
Champagnie completed his third full season with the Spurs in which he has played 82 regular season games in back-to-back years but this season he set career highs in nearly every statistical category.
The former Johnnie went for career highs in minutes (27.6), points (11.1) and rebounds (5.8) while shooting 38.1-percent from 3-point range as he set the new franchise single season record with 195 made 3-pointers.
Julian Champagnie was a key force in the Spurs reaching the NBA Finals, posting 11.2 points per game in the playoffs on 39.6-percent shooting from distance. His 20-point performance in Game 7 of the Western Conference Finals was a catalyst in San Antonio’s victory.
After going undrafted out of St. John’s, Champagnie was eventually waived from the Philadelphia 76ers to make room for Mac McClung on its roster so he could patriciate in the dunk contest. It wasn’t long before the Spurs added the Brooklyn native to its roster and he hasn’t disappointed.
Champagnie signed a four-year, $12 million deal with a club option in July 2023 and parlayed that into his big deal this summer.
The agreement between Julian Champagnie and the San Antonio Spurs came on his 25th birthday.
In the last three seasons, Champagnie has played in 238 of 246 regular season games with the Spurs, starting 156. He started all of the Spurs’ 23 postseason games this summer.
Now, he becomes one of the key players on the team to try and keep San Antonio at the top of the Western Conference and eventually trying to win an NBA Championship.
