St. John’s basketball: Mike Anderson, Lou Carnesecca thank responders

Two St. John’s basketball head coaches joined forced with other college basketball coaches around the country to thank the essential and frontline workers who are battling COVID-19.

Arguably the best and most famous St. John’s basketball head coach and its current leader have teamed up with college basketball coaches around the country to show their appreciation for the frontline workers.

Mike Anderson and Lou Carnesecca made appearances in a recent video from Madison Square Garden which was dedicated to all those who have been impacted and affected by the coronavirus.

Joining the two St. John’s coaches are some New York City area coaches as well as Hall of Famers, and soon-to-be Hall of Famers who experienced some major moments in The World’s Most Famous Arena.

Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski, Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim, Villanova’s Jay Wright, Kentucky’s John Calipari, Georgetown’s Patrick Ewing, Kansas’ Bill Self, Michigan State’s Tom Izzo, Seton Hall’s Kevin Willard, Providence’s Ed Cooley, Virginia’s Tony Bennett, North Carolina’s Roy Williams, Rutgers’ Steve Pikell, Iona’s Rick Pitino, TCU’s Jamie Dixon, CBS and FOX commentator Bill Raftery, Big East Commissioner Val Ackerman, and ESPN commentator Dick Vitale all showed their appreciation in the video.

The minute long clip was closed out by Carnesecca expressing his anticipation for the day that all fans can be back inside Madison Square Garden for sporting events, concerts, shows, and so much more.

Mike Anderson is in his first season at the helm of the St. John’s program as the Johnnies posted a 17-15 record (5-13 Big East) but the head coach has an overall record of 386-215 and is only one of four coaches never to have a losing season in their career as a head coach.

Anderson has made stops at Alabama-Birmingham, Missouri, and Arkansas before landing in Queens.

Lou Carnesecca had two stints at St. John’s as the head coach, the only college program he’s ever been the head coach of, although he stepped away for three seasons to be the head man of the New York Nets.

The three-time Big East Tournament champion went 526-200 in his 24 seasons as the head coach of the Johnnies, reaching the NCAA Tournament 18 times and the Final Four once.
