A transfer at was heavily connected to the St. John’s basketball team mocked the program after LJ Figueroa’s decision.

As if the news of LJ Figueroa‘s decision to enter the transfer portal wasn’t bad enough, St. John’s fans caught some grief from a transfer they once courted.

Ray Salnave, a graduate transfer from Monmouth and a Queens native, was being recruited to St. John’s after he narrowed his list to the Red Storm, Loyola Marymount, and DePaul.

St. John’s ramped up the pressure on Salnave, without having a scholarship available, by involving junior guard Rasheem Dunn, who built a relationship together on the AAU circuit and in high school basketball.

However, St. John’s had to pull out of the sweepstakes for the Monmouth graduate transfer because the coaching staff was under the assumption that LJ Figueroa would return to the program for his final year of eligibility and fill the final scholarship slot.

Ray Salnave ended up committing to DePaul and having to face the Red Storm at least twice next season was already an added bonus for him, but now he has some extra motivation when playing the Johnnies.

Moments after the news was reported that LJ Figueroa entered the transfer portal, Salnave took to Twitter to express his thoughts on the situation and some of his friends jumped in on the action, taking joy in the misery of St. John’s fans.

Ray Salnave averaged 14.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.5 steals per game in his final season in Long Branch, New Jersey while shooting 39.6 percent from the field and 36.4 percent from 3-point range.

DePaul is expecting to have a formidable backcourt with Salnave and rising senior, and the team’s leading scorer, Charlie Moore.

As for St. John’s, Mike Anderson now has the option to fill the one open scholarship slot on his roster with the transfers still available in the aforementioned transfer portal.
