Former St. John’s basketball stars ready to return to the court

A trio of former St. John’s basketball stars are ready to return to the court and will have the chance this summer in The Basketball Tournament.

After a three-month hiatus without sports, the summer and fall sports calendar is filling up quickly and The Basketball Tournament (TBT) will be taking place this summer.

Not only will the tournament will it be taking place, it will be taking place with some former St. John’s stars taking their rightful place on Overseas Elite.

DJ Kennedy, Paris Horne, and Justin Burrell will team up with Bobby Brown, Pooh Jeter, DeAndre Kane, Ashaun Dixon-Tatum, and NBA veteran and future Hall of Famer Joe Johnson.

Kennedy, Burrell, and Horne were all with the Red Storm from 2007-2011 and the trio shined at different portions of their St. John’s careers.

The leader of the bunch was DJ Kennedy as the 6-foot-5 guard averaged 11.7 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.4 steals per game. Kennedy has been with Overseas Elite since 2015 and was named the MVP of the tournament twice (2015, 2018).

Paris Horne averaged 9.3 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.5 assist, and 1.0 steals per contest in Queens and played for Overseas Elite from 2015-2018.

The 6-foot-3 guard did not play in the 2019 tournament as he suffered an injury and in this year’s version he will serve as a player and a coach as he’s still working is way back to the court, the team announced.

Justin Burrell, the 6-foot-8 forward, averaged 8.2 points and 5.0 rebounds per game as a member of the Johnnies and was named to the Big East All-Freshman Team in 2007-08 and the Big East Sixth Man of the Year in 2010-11.

Burrell joined Overseas Elite in 2017 and has played for the four-time champions ever since.

However, the team will be looking to respond from its first ever loss and elimination in the TBT after a 71-66 defeat to Carmen’s Crew in the 2019 tournament.

Because of the coronavirus pandemic the 2020 TBT will take place in one location with 24 teams over a ten day period and the full rosters will be released later in the month of June with no exact dates set for competition.
