St. John’s basketball transfer Ian Steere received an immediate eligibility waiver from the NCAA as he heads to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

Things did not go as planned in the year that Ian Steere was at St. John’s but the transfer received good news on Monday as the NCAA granted him an immediate eligibility waiver.

Steere, who will be at his third school, announced that he was leaving Queens shortly after the premature end to the season and announced his transfer to the University of North Carolina at Wilmington.

The Sanford, North Carolina native came to St. John’s as a transfer from North Carolina State and will be heading back home to complete his collegiate career.

Without the waiver Steere would have had to sit one season but now will be able to play both of his remaining years of eligibility at UNCW.

In two total seasons playing college basketball, Steere has only played in seven games, one with the Wolfpack and six with the Johnnies.

Previously committing to play for head coach Chris Mullin, Steere just did not fit into the system and culture that Mike Anderson brought to Queens as the transfer had to sit out for the first semester after coming to St. John’s mid way through the season two years ago.

In 3.5 minutes per game, Steere averaged 0.7 points and 0.2 rebounds per game.

The 6-foot-9 forward also had some off the court issues as a member of the Red Storm as he was suspended indefinitely towards the backend of the season for a violation of team rules but ultimately was reinstated prior to the postseason.

It was a tough 2019-20 campaign for the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks who posted a 10-22 record (5-13 Colonial Athletic Association) and its last NCAA Tournament appearance came in the 2016-17 season.

The Seahawks had reached the Big Dance in back-to-back seasons but have not been back in the postseason in any form since.

Ian Steere will be looking for more playing time and to make an immediate impact after receiving his waiver for the University of North Carolina at Wilmington this season.
