Bill Self and the Kansas Jayhawks have extended an offer to key St. John’s basketball recruit Kyle Cuffe Jr.

The battle to land Kyle Cuffe Jr. just became much more difficult for Mike Anderson and the St. John’s Red Storm.

Cuffe Jr., a fast rising prospect in the Class of 2022, announced on Twitter Wednesday afternoon that he received an offer from head coach Bill Self and the Kansas Jayhawks.

St. John’s previously offered a scholarship to the Blair Academy (N.J.) standout back in December of 2015 although the four-star prospect’s recruitment began to significantly heat up this spring.

Listed at 6-foot-1, 173 pounds, the 247 Sports Composite Rankings places Kyle Cuffe Jr. as the No. 95 recruit in the Class of 2022, No. 14 combo guard in his class, and the No. 3 player in the state of New Jersey.

Cuffe Jr. also has offers from Holy Cross, Stony Brook, Manhattan, Hofstra, Connecticut, Seton Hall, Iona, Pittsburgh, UCLA, Providence, Texas A&M, Kansas State, Bryant, Rutgers, Georgetown, and Georgia.

Labeled as perhaps the biggest potential recruit for Mike Anderson in his short time at St. John’s, the Red Storm have not had success at landing players like Kyle Cuffe Jr. in recent memory and the Johnnie faithful are only growing more concerned now that a blue blood program has entered the race for the offspring of a former standout in Queens.

Kyle Cuffe Jr.’s father, Kyle Cuffe Sr., played at St. John’s from 2000-2004, averaging 8.1 points per game in his four seasons with the program.

While St. John’s fans are concerned that landing a slam-dunk prospect like Cuffe Jr. in Queens will become more difficult now, the Red Storm did beat out the Jayhawks for Jordan Riley despite his commitment to Georgetown.

Riley, similar to Cuffe Jr., was considered to be a St. John’s lean until the final days before his announcement and his decision came down to the Johnnies and the Hoyas although he also included Connecticut, Kansas, and Florida State in his Top-5 finalists.

Landing Cuffe Jr. could be the start to a massive Class of 2022 haul that the Red Storm staff is eyeing.

There has been no update on a timeline for Kyle Cuffe Jr.’s decision as it seems like he is in no rush to make a decision anytime soon.
