The St. John’s basketball program is looking for a jump from redshirt junior David Caraher.

Entering his second season on the court with the St. John’s basketball program, the Red Storm are hoping to see a jump from David Caraher.

Caraher transferred into St. John’s from Houston Baptist where he was Southland Conference Freshman of the Year but that success did not follow him immediately to Queens.

The 6-foot-6 guard averaged 16.2 points per game, shooting 45.5 percent from the floor and 36.4 percent from 3-point territory at Houston Baptist in 2017-18 and sat out the 2018-19 season because of the NCAA’s transfer rules and regulations.

After originally planning to play for head coach Chris Mullin, Caraher remained with the program as Mike Anderson was hired to replace Mullin in Queens.

The Chapel Hill, North Carolina native averaged 14.7 minutes per game, seeing action in 32 contests for the Johnnies, and posted 4.3 points on 40.3 percent shooting from the field and 25.0 percent from 3-point range.

The St. John’s basketball program must see a shooting improvement.

Shooting was a major problem for the Red Storm last season but Caraher did jumpstart the St. John’s offense on a handful of occasions, most notably its win over Massachusetts in the Air Force Reserve Basketball Hall of Fame Tipoff where he scored 17 points.

David Caraher also opted to change up his uniform this upcoming season as he will switch his jersey number from No. 5 to No. 23.

St. John’s has a plethora of guards to utilize this season, but that does not mean that Caraher will see a decrease in minutes because the position is so vital in Mike Anderson’s system but if the redshirt junior can improve his shooting numbers, his playing time will also increase.

David Caraher and the Johnnies will begin its season on November 25 at home against an opponent yet to be named.
