There have been some significant takeaways for St. John’s basketball thus far through the season.

Following its loss against BYU in ‘Bubbleville’ at Mogehan Sun Arena, the St. John’s basketball team has dropped to 3-1 on the season, but there are some key takeaways for the Johnnies though four games.

Some could argue that the Red Storm have no business being 3-1, given there remarkable last minute comeback against St. Peter’s on opening night, and letting a winnable game slip through their fingers against the Cougars on Wednesday evening.

In between, St. John’s has picked up victories over La Salle and Boston College and injuries have been at the forefront for the Johnnies this season.

The Red Storm were without sophomore forward Julian Champagnie for the first two games of the 2020-21 campaign as he recovered from an ankle injury while senior guard Rasheem Dunn left in the second half against the Peacocks after hitting his chin hard on the floor.

Dunn needed stitches and entered the concussion protocol following his fall and did not play against La Salle, Boston College, or BYU.

St. John’s basketball with a lot to be proud of early in season

Only through four games, head coach Mike Anderson has already seen outstanding contributions from freshman point guard Posh Alexander and junior college transfer Vince Cole.

Cole was named as the MVP of the Lapchick Tournament, which saw him hit the game winning 3-pointer over St. Peter’s and average 20.0 points per game through the first two games for the Johnnies.

Alexander was also named to the All-Lapchick Tournament as he has demonstrated at such a young point in his college career that he is a perfect fit for Anderson’s system and the point guard of the future in Queens.

Big East Conference play starts next Friday against UConn, but the Johnnies still have two scheduled non-conference bouts prior to its trip to Connecticut to face Dan Hurley in the Huskies.

However, there are many takeaways from this Red Storm team in the early stages of the season.
