St. John’s basketball: Julian Champagnie, Posh Alexander share awards
St. John’s basketball stars Posh Alexander and Julian Champagnie shared their recent Big East honors.
The recent awards to be named to St. John’s basketball standouts Posh Alexander and Julian Champagnie had to be shared with other players in the Big East Conference.
Freshman guard Posh Alexander was named as the Co-Defensive Player of the Year alongside UConn senior forward Isaiah Whaley.
Alexander averaged 2.6 steals in 31.0 minutes per game, which ranks eighth nationally and the Brooklyn, New York native is the only freshman to be in the Top-25 players of steals per game.
Posh Alexander is fourth freshman in Big East history to win the Defensive Player of the Year and the first to do so 1995, joining Allen Iverson (1995), Alonzo Mourning (1989) and Patrick Ewing (1982).
The St. John’s point guard also is the fourth player in Red Storm history to win the award, joining Justin Simon (2019), Sir’Dominic Pointer (2015), and Mark Jackson (1987).
Posh Alexander also was an unanimous selection to the All-Big East Rookie Team.

Sophomore star forward Julian Champagnie won the Co-Big East Most Improved Award alongside Xavier standout Zach Freeemantle.
Champagnie, an All-Big East First Team selection, averaged 19.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, 1.3 assists, 1.0 blocks, and 1.5 steals per game while shooting 43.9-percent from the floor and 38.4-percent from three-point range.
As a freshman, the Red Storm forward averaged 9.9 points, 6.5 rebounds, 0.8 assists, 0.8 blocks, and 1.2 steals per game on 45.3-percent shooting, 31.2-percent from downtown.
Julian Champagnie is also the fourth player in program history to win the award, joining Chris Mullin (1983-84), Walter Berry (1985-86), and Marcus Hatten (2001-02).
St. John’s basketball stars still with more opportunities for awards
The Big East Conference will announce its Player of the Year, Coach of the Year, and Freshman of the Year on Wednesday, March 10.
Posh Alexander is the frontrunner for the Big East Freshman of the Year while head coach Mike Anderson is the frontrunner for the Coach of the Year.

Julian Champagnie is also a contender for the Big East Player of the Year Award.
