Former St. John’s basketball standout Sir’Dominic Pointer was named to the NBA G-League All-Defensive Team for the 2019-20 season.

Friday it was announced that former St. John’s basketball player Sir’Dominic Pointer was named to the NBA G-League All-Defensive team for his accomplishments this past season.

Because of the coronavirus shutdown of the NBA G-League, Pointer was limited to just 43 games in his third season with the Canton Charge, the G-League affiliate for the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The former St. John’s standout also became the first player in G-League history to total 80 blocks and 80 steals in a season, finishing second in Defensive Player of the Year voting.

In turn, the Detroit native was called up to the Cleveland Cavaliers roster on March 4 where he unfortunately did not get to play in Cleveland’s four games prior to the NBA season being put on hold because to the pandemic.

Pointer was a member of the Red Storm from 2011-2015 averaging 8.3 points, 5.2 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.5 steals, and 1.3 blocks across his four years. He finished his collegiate career with 1,078 points and finished Top-5 in school history in blocks and steals with 172 and 200, respectively.

The 6-foot-6 wing won the Haggerty Award, Big East Co-Defensive Player of the Year, and Big East Most Improved Player awards in his standout senior year in Queens in which the Red Storm reached the NCAA Tournament ultimately losing to the No. 8 seed San Diego State Aztecs in the Round of games 64.

Sir’Dominic Pointer is a part of a trio along with Mark Jackson and Justin Simon as the only St. John’s players to have ever won the Big East Defensive Player of the Year Award. Furthermore, Pointer and Dwight Hardy are the only players in school history to ever be named Big East Most Improved Player.

Pointer was the No. 53 overall pick by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2015 NBA Draft, as he still stands as the last draft pick to come out of the program.

While his offensive game has continued to improve, Pointer has been always known for his brilliant defensive play and hopefully that will be a building block in his game as he tries to establish himself in the NBA.
