The St. John’s basketball program is interested in a recruit with an incredible and amazing story back to the basketball court.

Mike Anderson and St. John’s continue to work the recruiting trail to try and land the next best prospects in Queens, but the program has been interested and in contact with one of the most unique players in the Class of 2023.

Spencer Joyner is completing his freshman year at University High School of Humanities in Newark, New Jersey.

However, the 6-foot-2 point guard had previously been enrolled at The Patrick School while he was in 7th and 8th grade but an illness while in the 7th grade put Joyner in the hospital at just 12-years old.

Spencer Joyner was diagnosed with pseudotumor cerebri, which is a weakening condition that results in migraine headaches and can cause vision loss.

During his stay in the hospital, former St. Patrick’s graduate and basketball star Kyrie Irving paid for Joyner’s tuition as well as his medical bills, according to a story written by basketball insider Adam Zagoria of ZagsBlog.

Through the work of the doctors at Hackensack University Medical Center, Joyner has returned to school and the basketball court and could be looking at a bright future like his idol Irving.

According to Verbal Commits, Spencer Joyner has offers from Seton Hall, Rider, Fairfield, and Arkansas Little Rock while his high school coach, Prophet Kates, posted on Twitter that schools like Iona, Marquette, Creighton, Maryland, St. John’s, and Rutgers have shown interest in the point guard.

Joyner visited St. John’s in October for the program’s ‘ Red Storm Tipoff’ which is a version of ‘Midnight Madness’ that is the unofficial start to the season.

There’s no debating that Spencer Joyner has the physical and mental toughness that Mike Anderson is looking for in recruits to reshape the St. John’s program.
